Christmas did not become an official American holiday until 1870.
The holiday was originally banned by the Pilgrims and Puritans during
the early colonial period due to its pagan associations yet the
‘unofficial’ celebrating of Christmas grew slowly until the Irish
immigration during the potato famine of the 1840′s. It was during this
time that the holiday began to gain massive acceptance until it was
officially declared a national holiday by Ulysses S. Grant in 1870.
Since 1870, the United States has officially celebrated Christmas as a
nation and as a result has declared as a nation the belief in the
coming of the Savior to earth. Just as the official Thanksgiving proclamations of the Presidents declare that our nation depends upon the
grace and mercy of God to exist,
the celebration of Christmas declares the nation’s faith in the
manifestation of that grace and mercy in the birth of the Messiah.
The following series of ‘studies’ will show the Christmas messages of
the Presidents where the head of the nation openly declares faith in the
Savior of the world.
